Class Descriptions

Body Expressions offers a variety of classes to choose from to meet your child’s different interests. We offer:

Performing Arts:

A combination class of ballet, jazz and tap offered for ages 2 and up. Ballet technique and terminology is taught with emphasis on proper body alignment, body placement, endurance, strength and flexibility. Jazz instruction includes body technique and terminology. Various jazz combinations and routines emphasize proper body alignment, form , strength and flexibility. Tap instruction includes fundamental steps and terminology. Proper sound and rhythm are emphasized in learning combinations and routines.

Ballet:

This class for ages 7 and up are an hour in length and include a more intensive instruction on technique and terminology. Emphasis on alignment, body placement, strength, flexibility and endurance is the focus of the instruction.

Pointe:

Basic exercises will train the dancer not only to stand and balance properly on pointe but also how to safely and correctly get onto and off of pointe. This sets a solid foundation for intermediate pointework, which includes the introduction of simple turns on pointe and allegro (jumps) in pointe shoes. Advanced pointe classes will progressively include a full range of advanced level ballet technique steps. All pointe students must be at least 12 and regularly attend a minimum of two ballet (soft shoe) classes per week in addition to the pointe class.

Be-Bop:

This one hour long class for ages 5 and 6 is a fun and energetic class that will get your child moving. This class will introduce your child to Hip-Hop. It is a "street jazz" style of dance that encourages individual stylization and self-expression for boys and girls.

Hip-Hop:

This one hour "street jazz" dance style for ages 7 through adult emphasize timing, power, strength and rhythm. This class, in particular, provides instruction that encourages individual stylization and self-expression. It includes basic terminology and steps, floor work and combinations.

Lyrical:

Lyrical is a dance style that blends ballet and jazz. This one hour class for ages 8 and up is another opportunity for individual stylization and self-expression. Emphasis in this class is on the lines of the body, grace, fluidity, and technique while using movement to express basic human emotions.

Musical Theater:

This one hour class for ages 8 and up incorporates dance, acting, voice and performance techniques. Dancers will learn what it takes to be "Broadway Bound" while learning routines and combinations from various musicals.

Contemporary:

This class for ages 8 and up is a form of dance that is an eclectic fusion of several modern dance techniques and various developing philosophies of movement. It is not a specific dance technique but a collection of methods developed from modern and post-modern dance that can take on many forms. It is based on a study of the human body and body/mind inter-relationships.

Jazz Technique:

This hour long class for ages 10 and up is a technical class for those who want to improve turns, leaps, jumps and flexibility. It will include various combinations, progressions across the floor, strengthening and body alignment.

Tap Jam:

This class is 45 minutes in length and is for ages 14 and up. Expand your knowledge of tap, improve your skills, add to your tap terminology while learning combinations, rhythms, progressions and improvisational techniques.

Stretch/Conditioning/Technique:

This class is specifically designed for ages 12 and up for anyone on dance team, cheerleading, or the dancer who just wants to be more flexible, tone and who would like to work on improving their technique all year long. This class will concentrate fully on improving the dancer*s skills such as leaps, turns and tricks. There will be no recital dance taught for this class. If you are looking for a challenge and have the determination to improve your skills then this class is for you.
